What to Wear After Sunset in Caleta de Fuste

One of the questions I see asked in the Fuerteventura Facebook groups time and time again is:

"Will I need a cardigan in the evenings?"

The short answer is...

Sometimes!

During the day, Caleta de Fuste is lovely and warm for most of the year, but once the sun goes down, the Atlantic breeze can make the evenings feel surprisingly cooler than many visitors expect.

There's another reason too. After spending the day relaxing in temperatures well into the twenties, even an evening of 20°C can feel quite cool simply because of the contrast. Friends back in the UK sometimes laugh and say, "It's 20 degrees – what's wrong with you?" But after a day in the Canarian sunshine, that ten-degree drop feels much bigger than it sounds.

OK... so maybe I'm only half Yorkshire!

If you're wondering what to wear in Caleta de Fuste in the evening, rather than giving you a long list of temperatures, I thought it would be much more fun to create Carol's Cardigan Guide.

Whether you're heading out for dinner, enjoying a sunset cocktail or taking an evening stroll along the seafront, here's my month-by-month guide to the sort of cardigan most British holidaymakers are likely to appreciate.

December, January & February

Chunky Aran Knit

Typical evening temperature:
16°C

These are the coolest evenings of the year.

Don't panic—this isn't a British winter! You'll still be sitting outside enjoying dinner, but after an hour or two chatting over a glass of wine you'll probably be glad you packed something cosy.

Think of your favourite chunky Aran cardigan. Perfect.

March & November

Classic Knit

Typical evening temperature:
17–18°C

By now the evenings are beginning to feel a little milder.

A classic knitted cardigan is usually all you'll need for wandering around the marina, listening to live music or enjoying a leisurely meal outside.

Comfortably mild.

Light enough that you'll probably carry it home over your arm.

April, May & October

Lightweight Knit

Typical evening temperature:
18–20°C

These are some of my favourite months to visit.

Warm sunny days.

Comfortable evenings.

A lightweight knitted cardigan is ideal if you feel the cold, but many visitors won't need it until later in the evening.

It's the sort of layer that's reassuring to have tucked into your bag—just in case.

June to September

No Cardigan Needed

Typical evening temperature:
20–22°C

This is proper holiday weather.

Most visitors are perfectly comfortable in a summer dress, polo shirt or linen shirt long after sunset.

If you do feel the cold more than most people, you might still pack a very light cardigan, but for the majority of holidaymakers this is definitely "leave it in the apartment" weather.

A Few Things Worth Remembering

Even at exactly the same temperature, evenings can feel very different depending on:

• A fresh Atlantic breeze.
• Whether you're sitting outside for two hours or strolling along the seafront.
• How close you are to the sea.
• How quickly you've become used to the Canarian climate!

If in doubt, pop a lightweight cardigan in your bag. It's much easier to carry one home than wish you'd brought it.

Carol's Tip

After living here for a number of years, I've learnt that it's usually better to have a cardigan and not need it than spend the evening wishing you'd packed one.

A lightweight knit hardly takes up any room in your suitcase, but it can make the difference between a good evening and a really comfortable one.
