Carol’s Guide to Excursions from Caleta de Fuste

There is plenty to enjoy within walking distance of Litha House, but you may also want to venture farther and discover another side of Fuerteventura during your stay.

These are two very different excursions that I have personally enjoyed and would happily recommend. Oasis Wildlife offers a full day among animals and beautiful botanical gardens, making it particularly enjoyable for families and animal lovers. Cool Runnings offers a shorter but more unusual adventure—travelling through Fuerteventura’s volcanic landscape on one of its unmistakable chauffeur-driven trikes.

Both are easy to arrange while staying at Litha House, and you don’t need to hire a car to enjoy either of them.

Oasis Wildlife Fuerteventura

Oasis Wildlife, still often known locally by its former name of Oasis Park, is much more than a traditional zoo. Set within a large botanical garden in the south of Fuerteventura, it is home to animals from around the world, including giraffes, elephants, hippos, zebras, sea lions and many more.

It is a full day out, with plenty to see as you make your way around the park. The beautiful planting and gardens are also a large part of the experience, although there is quite a lot of walking involved.

There are timed educational presentations throughout the day, including opportunities to learn more about the sea lions and birds. Check the day’s schedule when you arrive so you can plan your route around the park without missing the ones you would most like to see.

Getting there from Litha House

One of the advantages of visiting Oasis Wildlife is that its daily Oasis Bus collects visitors from several points around Caleta de Fuste.

The most convenient pickup point for guests staying at Litha House is the reception entrance at Villa Florida Apartments, just a short, flat walk from the house.

The current timetable shows:

• Pickup from Villa Florida at approximately 9:25 am
• Journey time of around 45 minutes
• Return bus leaving Oasis Wildlife at 4:30 pm
• No advance bus reservation required for the Caleta de Fuste route

Times are approximate, so I recommend arriving at the pickup point at least 5–10 minutes early.

You do not need an admission ticket before boarding the bus. Tickets can be bought in advance or paid for at the park entrance by cash or card. Keep hold of the Oasis Bus ticket you are given, as you will need it for the return journey.

Carol’s tip

Wear comfortable shoes and take sun protection and plenty of water. Although there are shaded areas, you will be outside for much of the day and the park can feel particularly hot during the summer months.

If you are visiting with younger children, pack their swimwear or a change of clothes and a towel. Oasis Wildlife now has Sabana Splash, a wet play area with 27 water features designed for children aged between 1 and 10. It provides a welcome opportunity for little ones to cool down during a hot day at the park.

There are several places to buy food and drinks, but we usually take a picnic. There is a designated picnic area, and bringing our own food means we can eat whenever the little ones are hungry without having to wait in a queue.

Allow the full day rather than trying to rush around. The bus arrives in plenty of time to explore the park before the return journey to Caleta.

Cool Runnings Trike Tours

You may already have spotted the wonderfully distinctive Cool Runnings trikes travelling through Caleta de Fuste.

Their chauffeur-driven tours offer a completely different way to see Fuerteventura. Sitting on the back of one of the trikes, with the open road ahead of you and the island’s volcanic scenery all around, is great fun and an experience you are unlikely to forget.

Cool Runnings offers several tours of different lengths, but I particularly recommend the two-hour Taster Tour for anyone trying a trike for the first time. Two hours is long enough to enjoy the experience and see some of the landscape beyond Caleta without committing to a longer tour.

I have done the tour myself and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a lovely choice if you want to see another side of Fuerteventura while doing something a little different.

Booking your tour

Tours can be booked at the Cool Runnings office in Caleta de Fuste or through its website.

If you are visiting during a particularly busy period, I recommend going to the office early in your holiday to ask about availability. The trikes carry two passengers and places are limited, so leaving it until the last day or two may mean your preferred tour is already full.

The tours are chauffeur-driven rather than self-drive, so you can relax and enjoy the experience while one of the Cool Runnings team takes care of the driving.

Even on a warm day, the breeze can feel cooler once the trike is moving, so take an extra layer if you are going out during the cooler months.

Don’t forget your camera or phone. The colourful trikes make excellent holiday photographs before you even set off.
