Carol’s Guide to Supermarkets in Caleta de Fuste
Where to buy a few essentials, do a full holiday shop—or find a little taste of home
One of the pleasures of staying in a holiday home is having the choice to eat out or stay in. You can make breakfast before heading to the beach, prepare a picnic, enjoy lunch on the patio or put together an easy evening meal when nobody feels like going out.
For me, exploring the supermarkets is part of the holiday. I enjoy seeing all the foods we don’t normally find in the UK and trying something different. However, if you are staying for a few weeks and plan to eat at home regularly, it is worth knowing where to do a larger—and usually less expensive—shop.
Mercadona—my current favourite
Mercadona, in the El Matorral industrial estate, is my go-to supermarket at the moment.
It has a good selection of fresh food, groceries, wine, household products and everything you are likely to need for a longer stay. It is generally less expensive than shopping entirely in the smaller resort supermarkets.
Mercadona also has a prepared-food counter, which is particularly useful when you want something easy without resorting to another takeaway. My personal favourites include the coated chicken, which makes a tasty quick meal, along with the paella and lentil stew.
Mercadona offers online shopping and home delivery. You could arrange for your shopping to arrive shortly after checking in at Litha House, which is especially helpful if you don’t have a hire car.
Personally, though, I think wandering around a Spanish supermarket, discovering unfamiliar ingredients and deciding what to try is part of the fun of being on holiday.
Lidl—right next door
Lidl is immediately next door to Mercadona, so it makes sense to look around both during the same trip.
It isn’t quite the same as Lidl in the UK, but it is unmistakably Lidl. You will recognise the brand and the general style of the shop, alongside Spanish and Canarian products that you may not have seen before.
If you are staying for a couple of weeks and expect to prepare several meals at home, a combined trip to Mercadona and Lidl should work out less expensive than doing all your shopping within the resort.
Getting there without a hire car
Mercadona and Lidl can be reached by walking or by taking the regular number 3 bus from Caleta in the direction of Puerto del Rosario.
Bus routes and stops can change, so check the latest information before travelling.

With a full load of shopping, however, a taxi home is considerably easier.
Carol’s Tip
Download and register with the TaxiClick app before setting off. Once you have finished shopping, you can use the app to request a taxi from the supermarket and avoid struggling back with heavy bags.

China Town and Super Barato
While you are in the industrial estate, it is worth allowing time to explore China Town and Super Barato.
These enormous variety shops sell just about everything: beach equipment, swimwear, toys, gifts, household goods, kitchen equipment and all those little holiday items you suddenly discover you need.
Our children used to love visiting China Town to spend their holiday money. Even now, it is worth a wander when we aren’t looking for anything in particular—you never quite know what you will find.
EuroSPAR at the Atlántico Shopping Centre
For a more enjoyable walk from Litha House, follow the coastal route to the Atlántico Shopping Centre, where you will find the large Padilla EuroSPAR.
EuroSPAR has a good selection of Spanish food alongside familiar British products, including things such as Bisto gravy. It is a useful compromise when you want to try local food but still like to have a few favourites from home in the cupboard.
If your shopping becomes heavier than expected, taxis are normally waiting outside the shopping centre’s main entrance. The taxi rank is on the same level as EuroSPAR, to the right as you leave through the main doors.
HiperDino—convenient for everyday shopping
There are four HiperDino supermarkets around Caleta de Fuste:
- Opposite the Happy Centre, beneath Oliver Fly.
- Opposite Fado Rock, near the main square.
- In the White Centre.
- In the Montecastillo Centre, farther up the hill.
The HiperDinos within the resort are convenient when you only need a few things rather than a full weekly shop.
They sell fresh bread and croissants, which is useful when the walk to the bakery feels a little too far first thing in the morning. They are also handy for drinks, breakfast supplies, beach snacks and any essentials you have forgotten.
A taste of home
The British & Irish Supermarket is just around the corner from Litha House and stocks many of the familiar British and Irish foods and brands you may miss from home.
There is also a larger British-food shop in the Montecastillo Centre. This is a different, independently owned business and is not another branch of the shop near Litha House.
These shops can be particularly useful during a longer stay—or when only the right tea bags, biscuits or gravy will do.
Buying drinking water
You can buy bottled drinking water in all the supermarkets, but carrying the larger bottles back to Litha House can be awkward without a car.
A water-delivery van normally visits Amuley Mar on Wednesday mornings, usually before 10am. You can buy large bottles directly from the driver, although the day and time sometimes vary, so please don’t rely on this as your only way of buying water.
Carol’s recommendation
For fresh bread, breakfast supplies or a few forgotten essentials, use one of the nearby HiperDino supermarkets or the British & Irish Supermarket around the corner.
For a pleasant walk and a broader selection, visit EuroSPAR at the Atlántico Shopping Centre.
If you are staying for a few weeks and plan to cook regularly, make the trip to Mercadona and Lidl. Explore both supermarkets, have a wander around China Town and Super Barato, and then order a taxi back to Litha House with your shopping.
Most importantly, don’t fill your trolley entirely with things you already know. Try something new—you may discover one of your favourite tastes of Fuerteventura.
