Litha House

Cocktails, Sunshine & My Favourite Bar in Caleta de Fuste

There are plenty of places to enjoy a cocktail in Caleta de Fuste and, as with everything, we all have our own favourites. But without a shadow of a doubt, mine is Oliver Fly.This isn’t intended to be a review or a list of the “best” cocktail bars. It’s simply one of those places that Andy and I return to time and time again—and the place I would choose for a leisurely cocktail in the sunshine.

Oliver Fly

This location has had many different guises during the 20 years we have owned Litha House, but it is the large rooftop terrace that has always made it special.Sitting above the rooftops of Caleta de Fuste, surrounded by palm trees with the Atlantic Ocean in the distance, it is a lovely place to stop, relax and watch the world go by.

Oliver Fly is also only around a three-minute walk from Litha House, which makes getting home afterwards particularly easy!

My Favourite Cocktail

Not all cocktails are equal, and there is something wonderfully decadent about sitting on a sunny rooftop terrace with a Porn Star Martini. It has to be one of my all-time favourite drinks: sweet, sharp and fruity, served with a small glass of Prosecco alongside it.

This does, of course, raise the important question

Do you sip the Prosecco separately or pour it into the cocktail?

I sip mine separately, but I’m not sure whether there is an official rule. Dario makes an excellent Porn Star Martini, but unfortunately he won’t reveal his recipe. Therefore, if you fancy making one at home, you will have to make do with the version I managed to find below.

When I’m Driving…

On days when I have to work or drive, Oliver Fly also makes an equally good virgin mojito. It still feels like a proper cocktail, with plenty of fresh mint and lime, just without the alcohol.Same terrace.Same sunshine.Same holiday feeling.

More Than Just Cocktails

Oliver Fly also serves a small tapas menu. Everything is freshly cooked, beautifully presented and very good—ideal if one cocktail gradually turns into a leisurely afternoon.

On Sunday afternoons, the terrace hosts the popular Glitter Boys Show.It is great fun and always attracts a crowd. If you fancy spending a Sunday afternoon sitting in the sunshine, enjoying a cocktail and watching the show, I would recommend booking in advance.

Fancy Making One at Home?

This isn’t the Oliver Fly version. It is simply a classic recipe you can try at home.

Ingredients

  • 50ml vanilla vodka
  • 25ml passion-fruit liqueur
  • 25ml passion-fruit purée
  • 15ml fresh lime juice
    10ml vanilla syrup
  • Half a fresh passion fruit
  • A small glass of Prosecco

Method

Add the vodka, passion-fruit liqueur, purée, lime juice and vanilla syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.Shake well and strain into a chilled martini glass. Float half a fresh passion fruit on top and serve with a small glass of Prosecco alongside it. Whether you sip the Prosecco separately or pour it into the cocktail is entirely up to you!
